Music

Music is a universal language. It is essential that everyone has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, compose music and listen with discrimination and judgement. Wilmslow High School endeavours to ensure that regardless of background, ability, gender, all students have the equal opportunity to learn musical instruments and progress their musical ability to the height of their potential and ambition.

Facilities and resources:

The music area comprises two main classrooms, two practice rooms and a small recording studio. One classroom is equipped with electronic keyboards, a wide selection of drums and percussion plus ukuleles and guitars. The second room is a specialist ICT suite with 15 workstations with MIDI keyboards running Cubase and Sibelius. In another area of the school music students have access to a further ICT suite equipped with 30 iMacs with MIDI keyboards and audio interfaces running Garageband and Sibelius.

Staff

There are two full time and one part time members of teaching staff. There are also ten visiting peripatetic staff who teach instrumental lessons on an individual basis both within and outside the core school day.

Curriculum

Key Stage 3.

Key stage three students (Years 7 – 9) receive one 50 minute lesson per week. The curriculum aims to give students the skills, knowledge and understanding required to enable them to access music at Key Stage 4 level. Key Stage 4

Students study the Edexcel specification for GCSE music. There is also the option to take a music technology route through the music course. This class is taught  with a more significant emphasis on the use of technology in the reproduction and creation of music.

The GCSE music course takes an integrated approach to the three disciplines of listening, performing and composing. These are delivered through 4 areas of study:

Popular Music in Context

World Music

Key Stage 5

We offer A-Level courses in both music and music technology. The music course follows the AQA specification and the music technology course follows the Edexcel specification.

Extra-Curricular

There are a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities at the school including concerts and talent shows and musical productions. There are also a number of ensembles that regularly rehearse such as:
