Modern Foreign Languages

The Languages Team at WHS aims to enable students to communicate effectively with people from other countries and cultures.  Students develop their understanding of how language functions and gain self-confidence in expressing themselves.  The school subscribes to various online resources eg, kerboodle, Studio and Stimmt, which contain lots of independent revision material in French, German and Spanish.  These can be accessed in school and at home.  We are also fortunate to have three language assistants in the team to work with students across all the key stages to develop their language skills.

All students in Year 7 study French and German.  This gives them the advantage of forming a good working knowledge of both languages and a solid foundation on which to base further language study.  We find that German and French are sufficiently different to ensure minimal confusion and so complement each other perfectly.  Furthermore, students have the opportunity to study Spanish as a  third language from Year 8 and this puts the students in a strong position to make an informed decision about their language options for GCSE.  In Year 7 all students take part in  a national spelling bee competition, which WHS has won twice.

All three languages are offered at GCSE and A Level and the students achieve excellent results at both key stages.

Students in Year 10 and the Sixth Form have the opportunity to practise their language skills and experience the culture, when they visit either France or Germany, whilst the Spanish students participate in an exchange programme with a school near Malaga in southern Spain.  All visits are well attended and thoroughly enjoyed.
