Wilmslow High School / Sport Xtra

Sport Xtra

More ways to move, play and compete.

Inclusive Power Leagues. Focused Performance Squads. Two complementary pathways giving more students the opportunity to enjoy sport, develop their skills and take part in meaningful competition.

Sport Xtra broadens access to regular competition while maintaining school fixtures and performance coaching. Both pathways are central to the programme.

Two pathways. One Sport Xtra.

Find your way to play.

Whether you want to enjoy regular games, try something new or represent the school, both pathways offer opportunities to develop and compete.

Performance Squads

For students who demonstrate the ability, commitment and readiness to train, compete and represent Wilmslow High School.

  • Focused squad training and performance coaching.
  • School fixtures and external competitive opportunities.
  • Invited or selected provision, with selection reviewed during the year.
  • High expectations for training attendance, reliability, effort and conduct.

Selection looks beyond ability

PE staff consider skill, game understanding, progress, attendance, attitude and commitment over time—not one isolated trial.

Students are expected to attend training regularly, honour fixture commitments and represent the school positively. A squad place does not guarantee selection for every match.

Good to know

Your questions answered.

Is Sport Xtra reducing competitive sport?

No. Power Leagues broaden access to regular internal competition, while Performance Squads retain representative fixtures and focused coaching. Both are central to Sport Xtra; Power Leagues are not a lesser option.

How do I take part in Power Leagues?

Check the Sport Xtra timetable and follow the sign-up or attendance arrangements shared by PE staff. There are no trials or ability-based selection to participate. Places remain subject to appropriate supervision, capacity and safety.

How are Performance Squads selected?

PE staff use professional judgement, considering technical ability, game understanding, performance, attendance, reliability, effort and conduct. Relevant sporting experience outside school may also be considered. Selection reflects development over time across lessons, clubs and fixtures—not one isolated trial.

Can I take part in both pathways or move between them?

Yes, where practical and appropriate. Students may use different pathways in different sports, and selection is reviewed during the year. Improvement and commitment may lead to an invitation to a Performance Squad. Students who prefer to move from a squad to Power Leagues can discuss this supportively with PE staff.

Does a Performance Squad place guarantee every fixture?

No. Matchday selection depends on the sport, competition and fixture requirements. Squad sizes also vary with staffing, facilities and safety. Students must maintain attendance, effort, conduct and commitment; staff may review a place if these expectations are not met, considering support and communication with students and parents where appropriate.

What if I am not selected for a Performance Squad?

Speak to PE staff for constructive feedback on your next steps. Continue with Power Leagues and other available clubs, subject to capacity and safety. Staff review progress during the year, so future selection remains possible.

How are opportunities kept fair and inclusive?

Power League teams may be balanced, rotated or organised around friendship groups where appropriate. Students are not publicly ranked or excluded on ability alone. Staff aim for equitable opportunities for girls and boys and consider individual SEND or medical needs, including appropriate adjustments and discussions with families to support safe participation.

What if a session is full, or arrangements change?

Where numbers are limited, fair arrangements may include sign-up windows, rotating places, extra sessions where possible or prioritising consistent attendance. PE staff share opportunities and updates through school notices, emails, newsletters, student briefings and lessons.
