Xtra Curricular

Xtra at Wilmslow

At Wilmslow High School, we believe that education is about more than just academic achievement. That’s why we offer a wide range of ‘Xtra’ Curricular Clubs, Visits, and Enriching Opportunities to help students grow, explore their interests, and develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. These activities complement the formal curriculum and provide students with opportunities to discover new passions, broaden their horizons, and build lasting memories.

Getting involved in ‘Xtra’ curricular activities is not only fun but also essential for personal and academic growth. From taking part in after-school clubs to engaging in educational trips and special projects, students can enrich their school experience in a variety of ways.

What are ‘Xtra’ Curricular Clubs and Visits?

Our ‘Xtra’ Curricular Clubs cover a wide range of subjects, interests, and activities that go beyond the classroom. These clubs provide students with the opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork, and other life skills, while having fun and meeting like-minded peers. Some of the clubs and activities available include:

  • Sports Xtra: Students can join teams for a variety of sports, from football, rugby, and basketball to tennis, athletics, and swimming. These clubs help students stay active, improve their physical fitness, and develop essential teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Performing Arts Xtra: For students passionate about the arts, our drama, music, and dance clubs allow them to explore their creativity, perform in school productions, or showcase their artwork. These clubs build confidence, public speaking skills, and provide an outlet for self-expression.
  • Wider Xtra: We also offer a range of clubs at lunchtime and after school, in other areas of the curriculum, such as textiles, chess and geography.  Some of these clubs have been set up by, and are led by students
  • Debate and Public Speaking: Debate clubs and public speaking opportunities help students build their communication, persuasion, and critical thinking skills. They also foster confidence in presenting ideas and engaging in discussions on global issues.
  • Social Action and Volunteering: Students can take part in community service projects and social action initiatives, where they can contribute to local causes, such as charity events, environmental sustainability, and volunteering at community centres or food banks.

Visits and Enriching Experiences

In addition to clubs, visits and enriching experiences are a key part of the Wilmslow High School experience. These include:

  • Educational Trips: Our students have the chance to participate in a variety of educational visits, from cultural trips abroad to visits to museums, universities, and local landmarks. These trips broaden students’ understanding of subjects, give them real-world learning experiences, and inspire curiosity and a global outlook.
  • Guest Speakers and Workshops: We host a variety of guest speakers, industry professionals, and workshops, where students can learn about different careers, fields of study, and life experiences. These events help students make informed decisions about their future academic and career pathways.
  • Leadership and Skill Development Programmes: Wilmslow High School offers leadership development programmes and other enriching opportunities for students to enhance their skills and gain valuable experience in areas like project management, teamwork, and communication.  We have a range of opportunities led by senior sixth form student leaders in each of the three parts of our Whole Curriculum.
