Entry requirements

Check the full picture.

Entry to Sixth Form and entry to an individual course are separate checks. Use this guide to prepare your questions and discuss a realistic programme with school.

General entry requirements

To access A-level or BTEC courses at Wilmslow High School, students must achieve a minimum of five GCSEs (or equivalent) with grades 4–9.

Where a student is seeking to study A-level or BTEC in a subject already studied at GCSE (or equivalent), it is necessary to have attained at least a GCSE grade 5 or a BTEC Merit in this subject.

To be more confident of success, students should be aiming to achieve at least one grade above the minimum grade requirement. Literacy and/or numeracy skills are also necessary on a number of courses, which explains why these courses require English Language, English Literature and/or Mathematics grades.

Read the subject entry requirements alongside the general requirements. If you have any questions about minimum grades or how your qualifications meet the conditions, contact the school.

Choosing your programme

Check the course content, assessment and any requirements for subjects studied alongside one another. Final programmes depend on entry conditions, the timetable, demand and the school’s admissions arrangements.

Further Mathematics is taken with Mathematics as part of a four-option programme. Core Maths is an additional one-year qualification. The Sport Extended Certificate is equivalent in size to one A-level; the Sport Extended Diploma is equivalent in size to three A-levels.

Accounting and Finance is provisionally offered for September 2027. Its final course details and entry requirements are still to be confirmed.

Read the school admissions arrangements. The Sixth Form team can confirm how the published requirements apply to your qualifications and chosen programme.

Make the whole programme work

The number of subjects is only part of it.

Further Mathematics

The school information requires four option choices, including Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Confirm the combination and the accelerated teaching arrangement with the Mathematics team.

Core Maths

Core Maths is an additional Level 3 qualification, normally studied over one year. It is not a full A-level and is subject to timetable availability.

Sport qualifications

The BTEC Sport Extended Certificate is equivalent in size to one A-level; the Extended Diploma is equivalent in size to three. They are different programmes.

Minimum and recommended grades

A minimum is an entry threshold. A recommended grade describes preparation that may help you succeed. Neither confirms a place or guarantees a particular final result.

Not every combination can be timetabled and courses need sufficient demand to run. Discuss alternatives as well as your first choices.
